Most likely reason is that the Oregon Healthy Teen Survey includes only a single global question about gambling, rather than assessing different activities separately, so Dr. Volberg took a survey that did not specifically address and focus on gambling like hers did and she's right, when you start asking more questions about gambling in more different ways, you're gonna get higher numbers of people because they're gonna start going, "Oh, well "I did do that and I guess it was gambling." - [Voiceover] Exactly. - [Voiceover] Didn't you say something about somebody not even, someone that you were working with, didn't even know, my tongue just got tied, did not know that purchasing a lottery ticket was gambling? - [Voiceover] Right, exactly, it didn't dawn on them that that was a gambling activity because it didn't involve being in a casino, playing a casino game, playing poker or anything like that. They weren't thinking of it as a game of chance, they were purchasing a lottery ticket, so of course that wasn't gambling play here
I've also run into other folks that don't, like when you bet on a game of pool or a bowling game or something along those lines, don't really consider that gambling. There's just so many different varieties. - [Voiceover] The office pool on when the pregnant lady is going to deliver her baby is one of the most quintessential workplace hazards for my recovering gambling addicts. When the football pool, the office pool of whenever the pregnant lady's gonna give birthdate or anything like that comes up, and that is social pressure. - [Voiceover] Right. - [Voiceover] "Why aren't you playing? Are you afraid?" They have to respond in a manner that's gonna protect themselves if they don't wanna identify themselves as a recovering addict and they have to continue to be social and it often ostracizes them when they're saying, "I just don't do stuff like that." My recovering gamblers tell me stories about driving through the drive-up at McDonald's and having to resist the urge to get the cup that has the Monopoly peel-off thing on it. - [Voiceover] Right. - [Voiceover] Or somebody coming to the door and wanting to sell them a raffle ticket and I like the creative way that they've solved this, instead of saying, "No, I can't buy your raffle tickets "because I'm a recovering compulsive..." They don't do the preachy thing. They say, "I'm gonna give you some money, but I'd like "you to give the ticket to my next door neighbor." Or something like that so that they cannot practice their addiction, but still be socially connected. The majority of adolescents in Oregon, back to our slide here, report spending rather small amounts on gambling in a typical month and I think that's a measure of, adolescents don't have a lot of money to spend, but, interestingly, just like any other gambler, when they want it, they will find the money, they'll find ways to get money, whether it's stealing or working more and becoming little workaholics so that they can have more money to go gamble with. Despite being less likely to gamble regularly, Black, Hispanic, and Asian adolescents in Oregon report spending significantly more on gambling in a typical month than white adolescents, so we can extrapolate from that piece of data that it's a cultural effect, that there is something about the culture that encourages gambling, allows gambling, does not have any restrictions on gambling, something along those lines and I can tell you that the cultural studies that I have seen, in particular, about Asian gamblers, is it's part of who they are. It's what grandma and grandpa and everybody does when they get together. Jewish culture, if you play mahjong as a person participating in your family activities as a Jewish person or as an Asian person and that is what you've always done, then if you develop a gambling problem, it is counterculture, it is against your family tradition to go ask for help as a general rule. So that's the quote, so if you reverse that, conversely, underachieving or negative behavior can become a habit, and that's exactly what happens with adolescents, so I just kinda wanted to show that to you. - [Voiceover] That's beautiful, thank you, Aristotle. The gambling participation is highest for playing free gambling-type games.
If you've never gone on the internet before, on websites and found out that there are free games that will teach you how to play poker, I'll tell you right now, their hook is to, after you play for awhile, put a little popup in front of you saying, "Wow, if you'd been playing "with real money, you would've had a 200 dollar cash out "by now, you should switch over to our other site, "which has actual gambling for money available." And, at this point, I'd like to put up our next polling question, polling question number three because I would like to get a feel for how many of you have ever purchased points, avatars, helpful hints, codes or items of value online that only help you succeed in the game, such as Facebook, and remember that earlier I talked about the gal who was addicted to, in my opinion, who was addicted to playing Facebook games and buying points and avatars and codes and helpful hints that literally had no cash value, that was only of a personal value to her and so let's get a feel for, of our people who are listening right now, how many of you have ever purchased, meaning you had to swipe your credit card or you had an account or you used some sort of online credit or debit method of paying for stuff that did not give you a cash reward, but that gave you something else that you thought was valuable, like an avatar, or how to get ahead in a game, and so we've had about nine people respond, we'll give you a couple more seconds to see if the other people in the room are just coming back from the bathroom and wanted to jump in on this, this is your last chance to answer the polling question number three. Five, four, three, two, one and let's broadcast the results. Look at that, 70% of you have not ever, but 30% of you have and if the 30% of you that have want to put in any little comments in the chatroom about what your experience was or how you felt about it or if you think that it could become addictive. Love to hear your personal experience and we'll share a little bit of that once we see it. Okay, that was interesting. - [Voiceover] I think that's very interesting. - [Voiceover] Yeah, valuable. Boys are far more likely to gamble regularly than girls and older adolescents are more likely to gamble regularly than younger adolescents. For me, sociologically, that fits that boys are more competitive and girls are more about group bonding and group communication. Boys tend to be more competitive in nature, that's just who they are and I'm sure that there's a socialization effect in the home about if they're seeing dad gamble. So going to the next one, I'm gonna try and shrink this down a little bit so that we can get to a few more of the slides, but I'm gonna pause on the things that I think are important. Rates of past year and monthly gambling in the present survey are substantially higher than rates identified in the Oregon Health Teen Survey. - [Voiceover] In everybody's learning style. - [Voiceover] Yup, so here we go. The adolescent study that is the quintessential study, and I'll tell you why, the person who does it is Dr. Rachel Volberg out of Gemini Research, which is out of Massachusetts. Gemini Research does the best gambling research in America, if not the world, in my opinion.
After following her research and others, she does the kind of human research with great science that I love. I will follow a lot of other people and their medical research, their statistical research, but when you want human subject research that they ask the right questions and you're gonna be able to get super useful clinical information out of the data, it's Gemini Research and Rachel Volberg. The beauty of this one, because you're gonna get the executive summary in the next couple of slides, the beauty of this one is this is the second Oregon youth and parent study done by Gemini Research, replicating the first study in 1998 and you'll know that replicating means they duplicated it, they took the same questions and they went right back out to the same Oregon areas and so this is one of those pure science hooray moments where you get to say, "Oh, now we'll see if it held up. "Is the data gonna look solid and reliable and valid?" well, yeah. Because you've got something that was done twice in a period of 10 years. So I'm really excited about the results of this research and I think it's gonna give you insight because it's Oregon, not far from Nevada, it's gonna give you insight into youth who gamble and their parents who love them, or don't. So you started out with a huge number, 1555 matched pairs of youth, age 12 to 17, and their parents. And here are the, not just the initial findings. You guys know that an executive summary crunches down all the really important and exciting data into, like, one sheet of paper, so when you go read this research, it's about 78 pages long, so this is the shrunken version and those of you who love reading research, you would very much enjoy reading this. She's a great writer. She does not make it dry. Six in 10 Oregon adolescents, 63% of those surveyed had gambled at some point in their life, now just pause on that, they did not just survey adolescents that said they were gamblers, they surveyed a bunch of adolescents. So they took, out of this wide variety of adolescents, 63% of them had gambled at some point in their lives, age 12 to 17. That's not my family, I mean, the family that I grew up with occassionaly people gambled, but I think that's an amazingly large number. I think it says a lot to what has happened in our culture since these children were born. 46% have gambled in the past year and 3% gamble once a week or more often, so of that 3%, you're gonna, obviously, wanna focus on why are they gambling more often than once a week. They most likely have some kind of a gambling problem. - [Voiceover] Doesn't the research, this is Denise E., the research says that there's like 2% of the adult population have gambling disorders. - [Voiceover] Yeah, that's the prevalence study from 2000. - [Voiceover] And then 3% of adolescents. - [Voiceover] There you go. - [Voiceover] And a lot of that has to do with the whole brain development and what you do as an adolescent and the fact that your brain is just so malleable and it's absorbing new information and new behaviors, and you're seeking out novelty and it's just really kind of scary. I've got a favorite quote by Aristotle and essentially it's, "We are what we repeatedly do. "We are what we repeatedly do." - [Voiceover] I love that. - [Voiceover] "Excellence, therefore, "it's not an act, but a habit." Is Monopoly broken or brilliant? Like Dominoes, Beer Pong, and Quidditch, Monopoly belongs to the rare class of games that are also traditions. Bankrupting your tablemates while rolling dice and running your fingers through that sweet, sweet paper money has proven utterly infectious.
The game has been around for an entire century, as Uncle Pennybags and his old-timey hat clearly indicate. During that time, an incredible 275 million copies have been sold, with official versions in over half of the world's countries. And whether you love Red Sox, Alan Turing, or, I don't know, horses, there's probably an edition for you. But all the celebrity from Monopoly is kind of strange, because Monopoly kind of sucks, right? At least many people who think critically about board games agree that it is clearly no good. Ultimate example of a board game is Monopoly. Well, this is Cat-opoloy. So this game is slightly less worse because it involves cats. On BoardGameGeek, for instance, it ranks 10,870th, below snoozers like Old Maid and Go Fish-- Old Maid, people. And according to board game critic Quintin Smith of Shut Up & Sit Down, it has numerous flaws. You often see who's going to win a long time before it actually happens. You can be eliminated, like, hours before anyone else https://oncasinogames.com/canada/. And it relies on a mechanic called roll and move, for every turn is at the mercy of a dice roll. I mean, there's literally a deck called "Chance," the polar opposite of skill. So what gives? Does half of the world just have terrible taste in board games, or is there something else going on? Monopoly is a terrible game. Monopoly may not actually be at fault here. In fact, all of our hate likely stems from the fact that we're playing the game completely wrong. And if you look at the history of the game, you'll see what I mean. Monopoly's roots are in a socialist folk game called The Landlord Game, designed by Lizzie Magie in 1906. There's a wonderful article in "Harper's" if you want to dive deeper into the backstory. I'll link to it in the description. According to Mary Pilon, author of "The Monopolists," the game originally taught people about the evils of monopolies by putting you in the shoes of greedy landlords. It was part of a zeitgeist led by Teddy Roosevelt against robber-baron American industrialists who were sucking the blood out of the economy. It was played in a way that was very similar to the game that you know today, with players hopping around the board, riddled with railroads and properties with really high rents. But there were some key differences. Players were all given equal chance to buy property before the game started. You could move in either direction around the board, provided you were debt free, of course. And it was all wrapped up in this anti-capitalist, monopolies-are-bad package. Also "Go" was labeled "Labor Upon Mother Earth Produces Wages," because, I don't know, socialism. So where did we all go wrong? Well, the interesting thing about The Landlord Game is that even the original patent mentioned that players can change the rules. And change them they did. For example, the 1920s Quaker community took strongly to the game and made a lot of changes that shaped the game to be the one that we know today. ALL: Thanks, Monopoly! Prices for properties were placed on the board, so good Quaker children wouldn't scream and yell auctioning them. And since many Quakers lived in Atlantic City, all the real estate properties in the games were changed to streets from there. Baltic Avenue harbored the poor African American communities, which why rent is so cheap. And Park Place was the site of segregated beaches and these big hotels, where rich out-of-towners would stay. So if the specter of American racism and classicism bums you out, don't worry. It gets much, much better. In 1935, a man named Charles Darrow cloned the game, sold it to the Parker Brothers, and Monopoly was born. They slapped a mascot on it who is the spitting image of Andrew Carnegie, and threw in a game piece in the shape of a top hat as nod to those cigar-puffing fat cats. In the hands of Parker Brothers, Monopoly flipped from being a game that critiqued the ugly side of land ownership to a game that celebrated it. Monopoly became this unholy union of socialism and capitalism, baked in with conflicting principles and governed by rules that are frequently broken. And this makes the game, well, messy. At its heart, Monopoly is not a bad game. It's just that we're playing it wrong. Because of the game's branding and prevalence of money, we assume that it's just a board game version of the Rich Kids of Instagram. But this makes it bad. And it runs against the original game that Lizzie Magie designed. So then what's the right way to play Monopoly anyway? For one, don't try to accumulate too much cash. Spend it really, really quickly. To quote the 2009 Monopoly world champ, the real object is to bankrupt your opponent as quickly as possible, to have just enough so that everybody else has nothing. And if you think that's really, really dark, this dog-eat-dog ecosystem was absolutely Lizzie Magie's intention. She wanted to use the game's rules to show the player how monopolies could drive up real estate prices and wreck communities, something that's playing out right here as I'm filming this in New York City. In today's design vocabulary, this is what's known as procedural rhetoric. It's the 1910 equivalent of stamping passports and "papers, please" and how it makes you reflect on the dehumanizing aspects of post-9/11 immigration. But this critical aspect is lost, because we all just want to be big-shot millionaires, counting our dollars and giving ourselves no-interest loans from the bank. And this usually manifests itself in the house rules, which may seem great, but actually kind of break the game. For instance, when you roll snake eyes, you get a cash bonus, or land on free parking-- oh, free parking. Most people think that when you land on free parking, you get paid a super-sized purse that has been collected from everyone's losses. Not in the rules anywhere. I checked. But here's the rub. This cash infusion does awful things to the game's balance. Money is intended to be a limited resource, just like in real life. But these rule changes keep pumping it back into lucky players hands. The result is a game that lasts forever, since you only lose by going bust. And that's one of the reasons why people say Monopoly is so boring. Over the years, other bad mechanics have wormed their way into the game, like the introduction of hotels. We can blame this one on the Quakers, who we can't blame for much. But they also gave us oatmeal, so we'll let it slide. THEME SONG: Nourishment for breakfast, oatmeal today. The number of available houses in Monopoly has a hard limit at 32. And one successful strategy is to create a housing shortage by buying them all up. That way, if you own two monopolies with four houses on each property-- that's 24 houses total-- there are only eight houses left in play. This puts a serious crimp on your opponent. But the option of trading four houses in for a hotel undermines this strategy. With the explosive amount of interest that is now in poker, it may be an ideal time to change your career and capitalize on this growing and huge field of opportunity. Think about the possibilities! Instead of dragging yourself to work Monday to Friday, 9 to 5, you could do something a little different and host your own bar poker leagues or online poker leagues. Forget about the stresses of your current job and the stresses of poker downswings; look into hosting these leagues as an income generator and spinner. You would enjoy far more freedom that what you would working a normal 9-5 job. You would meet a varied array of different people typically from all over the world, and running poker leagues may give you the opportunity to travel all around the world as well.
So I guess you’re beginning to wonder how one goes about setting up a poker league and all the things that are involved with it. You’ll need to get a good understanding as to how a successful poker league operates. Some of the main duties include: Player Management – Knowing how to allocate players to certain tournaments, ranking systems, and player prize money allocations for both bar poker leagues and online poker leagues. Venue Allocation – Choosing the correct venue and how to run the well designed poker leagues through use of these venues. Dealing Expertise – You’ll need to learn the rules of poker thoroughly as well as the requirements for being a dealer and everything that goes along with it. Computer Expertise – You’ll have to have a grasp of using computers and various database systems in order to successfully organize the poker leagues. Transportation in Portugal made a major headway during the 1990's. The country has 68,732 km (42,708 miles) of highways and 2000 km (1240 miles) of freeways connecting most parts. The seaports dotting the coastline also play an important role in the country's transportation. Equally important are the airports, namely those of Lisbon, Faro and Porto. In addition, there are subway systems in the two principal cities of Lisbon and Porto, both with more than 35 kilometers (22 miles) of commercial lines. 1. Air TAP Air Portugal, the national operator flies to many international destinations. 2. Bus There are private bus companies such as Rede Expressos, Renex, EVA, and the recently privatized Rodoviaria that offer services in addition to Eurolines. 3. Car Cars can be hired at ease. However, the car can be hired only by people who are above 21 years of age. Third party insurance is compulsory. Cars can also be imported here for a period of six months. 4. Ship Transportation by ship is available from all major ports, the important ones being Lisbon, Leixoes (Oporto), Funchal (Madeira) and Potimao (Algarve). 5. Taxi Taxi services can also be availed of and cabs are to be paid in accordance with the distance. Most of the taxis are painted in beige color. Standard meter fare is applicable within city limits but beyond that the charges are according to the kilometers covered. A return fare is also charged when the taxi is required to leave city limits. Luggage incurs additional expenses as a surcharge. About ATMs and credit cards The national ATM network, MULTIBANCO, makes the withdrawal of cash possible 24 hours a day through foreign and international network credit cards. The highest amount that is allowed to be withdrawn per transaction is EUR 200. Credit cards are widely accepted throughout the country. Popularly accepted credit cards include MasterCard, American Express, Eurocard and Visa. What a Dollar Will Buy You Meals at middle class restaurants are available at $ 2.5. The usual cab fare from the airport to the city is around 10 to 15 euros. What to Wear Light cottons and linens are best suited for the summer; light layers are appropriate for spring and fall while warm clothes are recommended for the winters. Women are generally seen dressed in pants, suits or shirts with long sleeves. Stylish jewelry can be used to complement the outfit. It's quite a casual place and you needn't be in a suit and tie to fit in, simply dress to be comfortable. Tennis is a popular game and courts are found in many places in the country. All tourist facilities of repute have either hard-surfaced or clay tennis courts within their complexes. Some hotels and guesthouses provide in-house tennis coaching by a resident coach for those tourists who may like to pick up the game. These outdoor sports can be enjoyed throughout the year, as the climate is quite mild towards the south. Several resorts offer flood lit courts so that visitors can enjoy a leisurely game at night too. Places such as Vilamoura and Estoril also provide tennis racquets and balls on hire for a small fee. The main tennis complex in Lisbon is located in the heart of Monsanto Forest in rural locales.
Golf is another sport that is very popular in the country. Some of the finest European golf courses are found in Portugal. Coaching is available for golf enthusiasts and most resorts are helpful in arranging for a coach. Algarve and Estoril Coast boast of the best golf courses in Portugal. However, new golf courses are coming up in the lesser-known regions of the west coast and the northern parts of the country. Portugal has been a much sought after locale for visiting golfers, ever since the first course was set up near Oporto in 1890. As the country has varied topography, each of the courses in Portugal offers a different type of golfing challenge. Madeira and the Azores are well known for their lush green courses that provide unrivaled landscapes. Estoril Coast on the other hand boasts of a unique microclimate that guarantees suitable ambience for golf throughout the year. Each of the leading course designers such as Sir Henry Cotton, Frank Pennink and Robert Trent Jones have created unique courses in the country that are popular throughout the world. Golf links at Madeira Island are located at a height of 500 meters, which is a rare golfing destination. Santo da Serra course affords breathtaking spectacle of the ocean and the surrounding scenic beauty. The recently opened golfing links in Palheiro golf course in October 1993, has established the country's reputation as a first class golfing destination. In all these places you can play online casino freely with good mood. Bull fights and football Another popular sport that has caught fancy of the tourists is bullfighting, which is different from its more famous Spanish counterpart. In the Portuguese version, the bullfighter enters the ring mounted on a horse and does not aim at killing the bull. The horns of the bull are also generally sheathed to protect the horse. Football is yet another popular sport with the locals as well as the tourists. Football enthusiasts include both spectators and players too. Team sports like basketball and roller hockey too are quite popular. There's a lot of emphasis on access to sports facilities and annual carnivals and parades that keeps tourists busy. It's a good idea to find out more about dates and plan your Portugal trip during such seasons because you'll find fellow tourists galore, and can make use of holiday catalogs and brochures to determine what events you want to attend. |
